Port Stephens Residents Serving in the Australian Military Forces in the Second World War

Introduction

Between 1942 and 1945, the Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser published lists of residents from the greater Port Stephens region who were serving in the Australian military forces during the Second World War.

The newspaper covered the areas of Anna Bay, Booral, Bulahdelah, Clarence Town, Dungog District, Gloucester, Glen Oak, Hinton, Karuah, Miller’s Forest, Nelsons Plains, Nelson Bay, Paterson, Seaham, Singleton, Salt Ash, Tea Gardens, Tarro, Tomago, Williamtown, Fullerton Cove, and Stockton.

From 24 September 1942 to 16 August 1945, a total of 39 lists were published under the title ‘In the Ranks,’ with details of 244 persons serving in the military.

These records were primarily compiled from information provided by readers, with the newspaper encouraging community members to submit names not yet included for future publication.

This paper is a summary of the newspaper lists.

It is important to note that the list, as below, is incomplete as some names would be missing due to non-submission. However, various War Memorials in the Port Stephens area list many of the names featured here.

The following list includes each person’s name, town, and, in many cases, the military branch in which they served.
